The Great Debate – Dentures versus Dental Implants

According to the American Dental Association, dentures are often desired for improving the cosmetic look of the patient and helping the person maintain some self confidence. However, Community Dental Implant Group (aka Death by Dentures) would like to introduce you to some negative aspects of dentures that everyone should understand before choosing dentures over implants.

The Negative Aspects of Dentures:Dentures

Needs to be Replaced – One of the biggest negatives of dentures is that they need to be replaced. Even the best dentures should be replaced every four to seven years.

Poor Fit – Poor fit of dentures is one of the biggest complaints of people that wear dentures. Have you ever been in a situation where you have either laughed or yelled and your dentures came forward and caused you great embarrassment? Dentures can be too loose causing the person to have slippage and even have the dentures fall out completely. Many people try using denture creams to help with this problem but may find that the taste or the need to frequently reapply the cream is a problem. On the other side, dentures may fit too tight and cause injury to tissue in the mouth. These injuries can even become so painful that the person is unable to wear the dentures at all. Either of these issues with fit can result in a very unhappy and unpleasant person. Dentures

Bone Loss – Bone loss is another problem that is associated with dentures. According to the American Dental Association, bone loss results when the bones and gums shrink in the first six months after tooth removal. This can cause problems with the fitting of the dentures and may cause you to need denture revisions later on. This can be costly and frustrating for many people. In addition, bone loss is a problem if, at a later date you decide that you want to have dental implants (which are more closely related to real teeth). The Implantologist can even decide that you need some bone transplanted to improve the ability to perform a dental implant surgery.  Bruce A. Smoler, DDS, FAGD,FICOI, an Implantologist in 1987, is often quoted by his peers and patients alike on the subject, “The only way to keep bone from shrinking away and atrophying is with Dental Implants or by keeping your own teeth healthy.”  Servicing the Greater Detroit Area for over 20 years, he has seen the number of people needing dental implants steadily increase year after year.

Change in Diet – Change in diet is a real concern to most people that wear dentures. Most people enjoy eating their favorite foods and do not like having to change their diets because they have dentures. When you first get your dentures you may have to stick to a very soft diet until you get used to the dentures. After this period, you may find that you will only have to minimally change your diet. However, some foods such as corn on the cob, apples, beef jerky are difficult to eat because of the inability to bite down hard on the food. Other foods such as popcorn may get underneath the dentures and cause discomfort.

What are Dental Implants? Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots that replace the bottom of a tooth. A dental implant can replace a single tooth several teeth or an entire set of teeth. Dental Implants have been around for over 50 years and Dental Implants are the most successful type of tooth replacement therapy. Dental Implants keep the bone in the jaws from shrinking. This is called bone Dental ImplantsAtrophy. There are many manufacturers of dental implants. All dental implants are made of titanium metal or a titanium alloy. There are various surface treatments for various dental implant systems to make the surface rougher and therefore increase the surface area on the dental implant fixture. Dr. Bruce Smoler is one of the few dentists in the Michigan area to have received a fellowship by the International Congress of Oral Implantologist. The I.C.O.I. is the largest professional dental implant society in the world. Learn More.

The Positive Aspects of Dental Implants:

With dental implants, the need to suffer with uncomfortable restorations has been eliminated. As our life span has been increasing, the need for some type of highly functional dental replacement system has become increasingly important. Dental implants are permanent dental replacements that are both natural looking and very functional. Implants look much Dental Implantsbetter and feel better, and offer the same force for biting as natural teeth. If you are a non-smoker with good oral hygiene habits, dental implants should last for a lifetime. Dental implants are a dependable and life long solution to missing teeth. Compared with dentures, which can be loose and unstable, implants provide a permanent solution that is both functional and natural in appearance, giving you the confidence to smile and show your pearly whites.
